A Portrait of Young Geeks Playing Dungeons & Dragons, 1981

d&d portrait 1981

Via Joey Hack/Flickr. Location not given. I spy with my little eye not one but two briefcases (one of them doubling as a DM screen), a Champion vest jacket, a reel-to-reel tape machine, a turntable, a black cowboy hat (DM’s prerogative), carpet wall art, and I do believe that’s an open carton of cigarettes on the ashtray on top of the TV. Kid in blue is holding Milton Bradley’s MicroVision, the first handheld video game console.

I think the kid in blue is playing Microvision. And the other thing on the TV is one of those sliding channel-changer boxes.

Holy crap, Steve. It is Microvision! Good eyes. What the heck is a channel-changer box? Is that for cable? The only cable channel I remember around ’81 was ON TV. And you just flicked it on to unscramble, or something like that.

Looks like I’ve got a couple of new posts to write.

I can confirm that is a cable box channel changer. The carton on the ashtray is actually Russell Stover candy.
I no longer own the cowboy hat.
(Found this because the image popped up in a documentary on The Tomb of Horrors).
