Toy Aisle Zen (1980/1983): The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

Star Wars 1980

Star Wars 1983

Via the BBC. I must be getting old, because the first thing I noticed is that the British kid is wearing a U.S.A. sweatsuit.

Christmas Morning, 1981: Dark Tower and AT-AT

Christmas Dark Tower 1981

One of the more epic “big ticket” combos, via EyeSPIVE. That’s the U.K. version of the game, as seen here. There’s another Dark Tower Christmas, including some AD&D toys, here.

That’s it for me until next year, kids. Thanks to everyone who follows the blog, and special thanks to all of you who have left comments (here and on Facebook) and sent me appreciative messages. Merry Christmas to all!

Christmas Morning, 1984: Return of the Jedi

Christmas 1984 ROTJ

Christine K and her Ewok friend (also made by Kenner) among the Imperial Shuttle, the B-Wing Fighter, the Dewback reissue, the Y-Wing Fighter, the Tie Interceptor, and a slew of figures. I also see a couple of 1985 calendars: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Duran Duran.

Christmas 1982 At-At

Christmas Toy Aisle Zen, 1980: The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars Toys 1980

The caption, via the Birmingham Mail:

Edgbaston twins Antony and Richard Joseph, both aged six, are seen here enjoying the toy department at Lewis’s in Birmingham on December 15, 1980.

Lewis’s was a department store chain in the UK that was in business from 1856 to 1991.

Lovely photo from a time when man-children weren’t snatching up all the Star Wars toys before the kids could get to them.

Christmas Morning, 1979: Star Wars, Micronauts, Buck Rogers, and The Black Hole

Christmas 1978-3

Membros and Repto! There’s also a torn open The Black Hole action figure above the Micronauts. Maximillian is standing on Monopoly.

Christmas Morning, Circa 1975: Kenner’s Six Million Dollar Man

Christmas Six Million

That’s Mattel’s Cathy Quick Curl Doll on the right. Mikey Walters has a number of Kenner’s Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman catalogs, boxes, and instruction manuals on display here.

‘Space Toys’ Ads (1978)

Space Toys Ad 1980

The ads are via Roboplastic Apocalypse, the most comprehensive robot toy site on the internet. Notice that Santa is riding the Viper in the first ad, followed by his other outer space reindeer. Very clever.

The last ad features Combatra, the priciest item on the Shogun Warriors menu, selling mostly at high end department stores for $49.99 or more. There’s a great entry on the toy at CollectionDX, where I got the pictures below. Click on the link to see all five vehicles combine into a giant robot, long before Matchbox’s Voltron entered the fray.

Christmas Morning, 1978: Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Adventure People

Christmas 1978-2

Another shot starring the Death Star and the Daredevil Sports Van, not to mention all the major Battlestar Galactica vehicles, via Darrick Bachman. I also see a Tie Fighter, a die-cast X-Wing Fighter package, a Spider-Man Mobile Crime Lab (below, via Jon Knutson), and a Nylint Trail Blazer (below, via eBay).

Christmas Morning, 1978: Star Wars and Adventure People

Christmas 1978

The kid fondling the Death Star, as his brothers look on a little enviously, is Stephen Fry. That’s Kenner’s Stretch Octopus in the pink and orange box, and you can also see the Adventure People Daredevil Sports Van, first released in 1978. Fisher-Price’s Adventure People may be the greatest action figure line of all time. There, I said it.
