It’s hard to believe now, but no one anticipated how massively successful Raiders of the Lost Ark was going to be. Kenner picked up the merchandising gig late, and the Raiders play sets and action figures didn’t appear until the second half of 1982—after E.T. was released. By then it was too late. Yo Joe!
Apparently looking through the mini headpiece on the mini Staff of Ra revealed the location of the ark in 3-D.

Even when I was a kid I could tell the RAIDERS toys had a chintzy feel to them, which I guess was from them being hastily designed and assembled to reach the shelves. I had a couple of the figures but none of the playsets, although I loved the movie. Mostly I made up my own adventures and didn’t recreate movie scenes. But no, nothing really could compare to STAR WARS toys!
I wish I’d had some. There’s a “Streets of Cairo” playset that’s pretty hilarious… I had the Tron figures and one of the cycles, but mostly I was obsessed with G.I. Joe at the time. I don’t even think I had any Return of the Jedi figures.
