Because if there’s two things that go together, it’s AD&D and the beach. And the towels must be used at the beach, because “beach towel” is printed right there at the top. Try not to lose your dice in the sand, gamers.
David Sutherland art appears on both towels. In fact, the two in the first photo belonged to Sutherland and appear at The Collector’s Trove. The second and third images are via eBay.
UPDATE: Zenopus (of Zenopus Archives) kindly sent in this photo of a third towel. (Thanks again, Z.)
It’s definitely from the same series, but I can’t tell who the artist is. I don’t recall seeing the design anywhere else. What monster do you think is guarding the treasure (‘X’ marks the spot), considering the adventurers are already tackling a red dragon?
Please contact me (2warpstoneptune@gmail.com) if you spot a different towel, or if you find close-ups of the giant centipede/dungeon towels.
UPDATE (6/30/14): The righteous “Mr. D.” sent in these detailed views of the dungeon crawl towel seen above. Great stuff.
I had the knight / blue dragon one. No idea if I still do, but I seem to recall hanging onto it beyond my teen years. I’ll give a couple likely boxes a quick search tonight, and post pics on my blog if I can dig it up.
I’m wondering if there were only these two…
Up until you posted this, I’d only ever seen the blue dragon design. My sister had the exact same one – many things in my family were bought in duplicate, to keep the peace between siblings.
Nope, it was not in the box I thought. I did find my Colonial Viper Launch Station, though.
Damn your bottomless boxes!
They hold their value better than most 401k’s. And are more fun.
I’m just jealous, of course…
Heheh. I got my sense of preservation from my dad. You should see the stuff he managed to save from when he was a kid. I’ll look to see if I got any pictures of his Robin Hood castle set, or the old west towns. We’re talking stuff from the early 1950s…
Anyway, I just did a photo shoot of some of the stuff I dug out when looking for the towel, since I’m snowed in today. I’m heading over now to post them to my blog…
It’s what all 98-pound weaklings should be sitting on when the bully kicks sand in their eyes. — said the former 98-pound weakling.
These are perfect for your D&D camp movie…
There’s another towel with a dungeon on it. Let me see if I can find a picture.
Awesome. I’d love to see it. Different artist, I imagine?
I found it and emailed it to you earlier. It’s definitely from the same product line. I think the artist is the same but I’m not 100% sure. It looks like the same style.
Thanks, Zen. Will update the post soon.
Rumor has it there’s also an AD&D beach ball. We must complete the set!
How did I not ever know about these. I must travel back in time to tell my teenage self to BUY THOSE RIGHT NOW!!!
