All of the photos are via MLive, where you can see more, including the original floor plan. Jackson, Michigan’s Westwood Mall is still around.

Can anyone see what the poster is on the record store wall—just to the right of mom’s head? I have another shot of a mall Gap store here.

UPDATE: Thanks to all who identified the Cyndi Lauper poster. The Welsh Piper found the actual item (below).

    I believe it’s a Cindy Lauper poster.

Definitely looks like it says “LAUPER” down the right side, so I’m guessing a Cyndi Lauper poster?

Man, now I wanna know what album those ladies are discussing.

It’s really hard to see – is that a poker hand of cards in the lower-left corner?

I think it’s just a reflection of her hand. And I think that’s the back cover of the LP. She’s trying to convince her mom to buy it, so she has to be showing her the front cover, right? My guess is Madonna. This girl is pop all the way.

I’m with you on the mom/daughter vibe – whatever she’s saying to mom includes the word “totally.” I think her garb is a few shades away from Madonna, but that may reinforce your theory – daughter resorts to an album cover to show how cool 1984 fashion really is, if only mom would let her dress that way. That, at least, would explain their respective expressions.

That’s definitely a pleading look. The mom does not look like she’s giving in. “It has the word ‘virgin’ in one of the songs! I don’t think so!”
To be honest, when I first glanced at the picture and mom, I thought, “That’s a man, baby!” I could have sworn that was a mustache.

I really want a time machine.
