John Keel’s The Mothman Prophecies (1975) popularized what several witnesses described as a man-sized, winged creature with glowing red eyes sighted in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, during 1966 and 1967. As far as I know, this is the only Mothman illustration Frazetta did, so I’m not sure what the “Exclusive Frazetta Inside!” refers to.
A 12-foot tall Mothman statue was unveiled in Point Pleasant in 2002, and appears to be based on Frazetta’s dramatic rendering more than actual eyewitness accounts.
High Times, as you might have guessed, is “the definitive resource for all things marijuana.”
That Mothman Prophecies movie (2002) was weeeeirrrd. It wasn’t like anything really happened in the movie, but afterwards it like, lingered. It still pops up in my mind every now and then.
The movie was based on Keel’s book, and it’s the reason city funds were released to pay for the statue, which was originally supposed to be much bigger, and the eyes were supposed to light up. There’s a Mothman Museum across the street.
Me too, for some reason that movie lingered with me as well. I think about it for some reason every so often
Frazetta is my all-time favorite and my wife is from Pt. Pleasant (I’m from across the river) so this piece of art is special to me. Saw a replication of it at the EMP Museum in Seattle this summer. Fun fact: Pt. Pleasant also has an annual Mothman Festival, with a 5K run and a Miss Mothman pageant.
I would love, love, love to see the statue and the museum. Miss Mothman pageant? That is something special.
