Here are three of the four puzzles produced by Whitman. You can see them all in the last shot. The same artist painted all of the covers, but I can’t make out the signature.
UPDATE (1/21/16): Thanks to Ian for identifying the artist as R.L. Allen. Allen did a series of Universal Monster jigsaw puzzles for Whitman in the late 1960s, as well as quite a bit of work for the Masters of the Universe franchise.
In my mind, each of these completed puzzles is framed and hanging in Harry Hamlin’s study.
You got a laugh from me. Was there a L.A. Law jigsaw puzzle?
Wait. This is in his desk:

Natch. Lately, he spends his free time writing up new cases and an improved “verdict viewer” for his homebrew expansion set.
I love that ‘Perseus Battles Calibos’ one!
It has got it all: Bubo, stabbed scorpion, Charon at the back, Medusa’s head in the sack…
Dan Goozee is the artist’s name.
He did the Clash of the Titans movie poster with the Kraken on it, along with artwork for Battlestar Galactica, and Moonraker.
Good interview with him here:

Wow, thanks for the link. It’s a lengthy interview, but from just a quick read-through on the Tora! Tora! Tora! part, it made my head spin on how much time and effort Goozee and his team put into just the storyboards alone. 3 YEARS?!! …And don’t even let me get started on the “miniature model builders” …yeah, for battleships that were 30 feet long. Sure, no problem!
lol. Sorry to stray off topic, but man, have times changed…
The old ways weren’t faster, just cooler!
More of his concept art here: http://www.galactica.tv/battlestar-galactica-1978-news/dan-goozee-battlestar-galactica-concept-art.html
Wholeheartedly agree. On that note, I do random cassette tape “diaries” of sorts with my trusty old Panasonic cassette tape recorder…a millennial co-worker of mine couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t just use a modern voice memo or digital recording app instead. I had to explain that there’s something awesome about the pushing of buttons and the exertion of force to do so…to hear the engaging of plastic and metal, the whirring of gears and belts, magnetic tape over heads, etc. …there’s nothing like it.
I think the same totally applies to the 3D CG renders of gigantic starships as opposed to the physical and mental toil of building those 30 ft. battleships and what not…
I knew Goozee did the poster, but the puzzle covers? It does look like his signature, though. Maybe they were all prelims he did for the poster, and MGM licensed them to Whitman?
My bad, I’m wrong, you’re right.
It was R. L. Allen.
Not much info on him out there. He did a lot of Whitman puzzle art (Universal Monsters, Masters of the Universe).
I was looking on ebay, found his sig on the ‘Perseus Battles Calibos’ and looks the same on ‘Perseus Rides To Victory’…
