Man, talk about standard issue for us SoCal kids in the early ’80s. I had a generic navy blue velcro wallet, but I saw many an Op, Lightning Bolt and Van Halen wallet amongst my peers. Somehow the Van Halen one is most reminiscent of those times for me. Something about that “VH” logo…so iconic.

I’m sure we could trade stories forever about our beloved velcro sidekicks. Every kid in my neighborhood would get beach sand permanently embedded in the fuzzy part of the Velcro strips and within the confines of the “coin pockets” within, so every Rrrrrip! opening of the wallet would be accompanied by a spray of whatever sand grains would get loose from their hold. Yet, no matter what, there would always be sand left in there.

The wallets were also a sort of status symbol of sorts …common and/or nerdy boys would have their RTD bus pass and the paper library card in there somewhere, while the “studs” would more likely have a collection of those wallet-size pics of the hottest girls in school that every one else could only dream of having. Remember that? The plastic “fan” of windows that you slid cards/photos in…
