A Portrait of Young Geeks Playing D&D (1982)

D&D Tourney 82

March 31, 1982. (Keith Graham/Miami Herald)

The caption:

At the Dungeons and Dragons tourney each table had a dragon master and six players. This is one of the intermediate groups. There were three divisions: beginners, intermediate and advanced players.

The “dragon” master’s shirt is awesome. I bet he still has it.

The back story was that Arthur (seated top right) and I had a Saturday detention that we skipped out on and somehow got ourselves to the Science museum and we played D & D for about 16 hours straight in a tournament. Hector (seated middle right) came in 2nd place and the prize was a Tunnel and Trolls game. Memorable moments was our 2nd game and our DM “Junior” who had an incredible module where were all thieves…it really shaped my DM style for the rest of the decade. CRAZY I JUST RANDOMLY RAN INTO THIS my copy of the news paper was lost during hurricane Andrew. on Monday when we went back to school with excuses about missing detention the news paper was sitting right there in the principals office…LOL
