Leisure Home Designs, 1980

There are thousands of books filled with leisure home designs, but very few actual leisure homes. Utopia is a design concept, not a reality. The artists and publishers are selling a dream. I want one of these houses like I want a window table in Ten Forward of the USS Enterprise.

The images above are from Voices of East Anglia. They’re originally from Popular Science Leisure Homes by Alfred W. Lees with Ernest V. Heyn (1980).

I posted some 1960 designs here.

I want one of these places. And it goes as evidence of my belief that stylistically, the 1970s actually didn’t end until 1981 or 82.

    I thought you’d appreciate these.

Lots of wood, stone fireplaces, the last gasp of mid-century modern furniture, globe lights, MACRAME PLANTERS. What’s not to like? Now I feel the need to go watch some Ark II…

Wait until you see the wicked ’70s interiors I found. Not to mention the garage with wall graphics AND a swordfish.

My ex-wife inherited a supposedly monstrous swordfish from her grandfather, but she never had a chance to go down to Florida to get it before we split up. If she ever does, I’ll try to get a picture.
