Halloween marks the beginning of my personal holiday season. October itself has a smell and a feel, a comforting crispness, even in Southern California. I don’t have the time to do anything elaborate for the blog, but I do have a few great shots like the one above, and I’ll try to mix in some other ghostly stuff as well.
The first costume I remember wearing is a Luke Skywalker number my mom made for me in ’77 or ’78. What about you guys?
First costume I remember was Mazinga (of Shogun Warrior fame) – had to be ’78 or ’79. Here’s a pic of the Ben Cooper box; there’s a photo of me wearing it somewhere…
That’s brilliant. I know tracking down photos is a pain, and that’s why I didn’t mention it in my post. But this IS a collective history, so I’d be thrilled to post any photos you all find and send in…
The earliest I remember was Halloween 1974 (I was 2 1/2), and my mom put me in a bunny mask. She claims I picked it out. There’s a picture in an album somewhere. It was similar to the one on the right: http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mG2RyxmbLV5LlYdX8VdRuWg.jpg
The next year I redeemed myself with a (mom-made) Robin Hood costume
That bunny mask is some freaky Donnie Darko business… I think I have a shot of a kid wearing the Robin Hood (Disney fox) Ben Cooper costume.
This is so cool, my three year old is going as chewie this year.
Awesome. We’re trying to figure out what to dress up our 2-year-old daughter as. I’m thinking a zombie or Velma. She loves the original Scooby.
I like how you made sure to specify “original”
I think my first costume was Godzilla in 1979. It came in one of those boxes you’d buy at Kiddie City with the plastic mask with rubber band, and the cheap one-piece costume that’d always rip by the end of your trick or treating.
I went to a Catholic school kindergarten class, and I got mad because my idiot classmate kept calling my costume Godzooky because I obviously wasn’t large enough to be the actual Godzilla size. He was pulling my leg and I fell for it. LOL. Good times.
I was Luke Skywalker than year. And in 1979 (due to the broadcast of The Star Wars Christmas Special) Boba Fett masks were sold (but not costumes), and I was Boba Fett that Halloween, a full 7 months before the release of The Empire Strikes Back.
