I believe this is called decor porn. I found the photos at Mice Chat. They’re originally from a 1970 Japanese magazine.
Here’s some more, supposedly from the hotel architect, Alfred Nicholson. Look at those colors, the beaded light fixtures, the lush ferns.
I want to visit these places and talk to the ghosts who live there. (Remember the empty shopping malls?)
Here’s a shot of the hotel lobby today (via USA Today) for comparison. It could be much worse. Pretty soon every space we inhabit will look like the waiting room at a doctor’s office.
Couldn’t we find a happy place somewhere between these 2 decors?
I demand nothing less than red and pink carpet that sparkles in the light! With ferns!
I think the ghosts in that first picture would wonder why they’re sitting at that tiny shelf of a desk staring at the wall, when personal computers don’t exist yet and there aren’t even phones installed.
On second thought… ARE those things phones? I took them for decorative wall hangings, but now I’m not so sure. It’s too blurry to see detail, but I can recall some pretty oddly-shaped wall phones from the 70s…
You know what that is? A writing desk! So kids can write letters and postcards to friends and relatives. That kid is using a pencil or a pen to write words on a piece of paper.
Let me know when you regain consciousness,
That’s crazy talk!
I always carry note books in my messenger bag. Sometimes I get second looks while checking it. Really? I’m the weirdo now? Checking my grocery list? I’m not the one with a piece of plastic crammed in my face 24/ 7.
Red seems to make people angry these days, maybe that’s why they like being herded around and tazered on Black Friday. You know, the only place you regularly get to see this kind of design is on TCM when they decide to sneak in some more recent classic movies. When they show Le Mans, it’s like a holiday for me. 1970’s France? Wow.
“supposedly from the hotel architect”….nothing supposedly about it. That’s exactly where I got these photographs.
