That radio is no good. How is she going to talk to Han without the headset?

I mistakenly dated two of these designs (Darth and the Falcon) as 1977 in a previous post. I still like Lando the best. More Empire transfers here.

Star Wars, Star Trek and the 21st Century Christians by Winkie Pratney (Bible Voice, 1978)

SW ST-1

SW ST-2

A very strange but fascinating attempt to force the Evangelical Christian worldview into the Star Wars and Star Trek universes. The self-published book by “mavin” Pratney is written in free verse and dedicated to George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry, and Jesus. From Chapter 1:

Understand.

You were made to live forever.
Our hunger to go beyond the stars is not alien.
It is normal. You were born to rule the Universe.
Our desire to plant a border beyond the edge of the Universe is but a dim, diluted echo of our true created destiny.

Don’t give up. Don’t throw in the towel
because all the world seems filled with its small aspiring Darth Vaders –
Don’t line up behind the Dark Lord. Our awareness that our lives ought to be involved in a great battle
which somehow involves the whole future of Mankind is far, far more than fairy tale.
Our dreams,
Our hopes
Our expectations are not big enough.
It is time we gave up our small ambitions and discovered our real destiny […]

The odds seem overwhelming –
Many strong and great men gone forever.
No sign of any of the Jedi Knights around Against us, near invincible technological might
Its ally, supernatural power twisted to evil and destructive ends.

One by one, the strong men in high places giving up the battle,
One by one, the few and the brave hunted down and killed.

And now, the Final Showdown.

You can read the whole thing on the author’s site.

The Empire Strikes Back Trading Cards and Collecting Box (Topps, 1980)

ESB-1

ESB-2

First time I’ve seen this particular package and the “collecting box.” What’s wrong with a rubber band or a shoebox?

For many consecutive weekends in 1980 a neighbor girl and I would walk to the local liquor store and buy as many of the ESB packs as we could afford. During the week I would comb the house and the car for loose change, squirrel away what I was supposed to be using for milk at school, rake through hundreds of pay phone slots, try to sell old football cards. I had most of series one (red border) and series two (blue border), but I don’t think I had any of series three (yellow border).

You can see all the series one cards, as well as a whole bunch of classic card and geek ephemera, at jeffliebig‘s Flickr.

Really nice original art. Many of the cups were recolored and used for the Empire Strikes Back series released in 1981. The boxes are from the original Star Wars series. The cups are a mix from both series.

We always had Dixie cups in a little dispenser in the bathroom—wasteful, sure, but so much more civilized.

One of many Star Wars poster sets, this one came with Kenner’s “Playnts” that dried out, as I recall, within a few hours. Were these posters also given away in a General Mills cereal promotion, or am I thinking of something else?

I’ve included all of the original illustrations, though obviously not all the cards. Once again you can thank Mikey Walters for the great scans.

The artist is uncredited, but some of the illustrations look like Howard Chaykin’s work. Chaykin penciled the first ten issues of the Marvel comic adaptation and also did some very early character concept sketches, as seen here.

Return of the Jedi ‘Death Star Battle Sweepstakes’ Ad and Entry Form, 1983

ROTJ 1983

Look at that Grand Prize, nerds! A “futuristic video room,” an Atari 800, and Atari’s Star Wars coin-op! I also dig the Darth Vader Speaker Telephone, even though it looks like a blender.

I love how the entry form requires at least some rudimentary knowledge of the movie and the game (which I never played). The ad art is very Berkey-esque.

Ad is from Starlog #76 (November, 1983) via Martin Kennedy. (If you’re not following Kennedy’s Tumblr, you’re really missing out.)
